Welcome to a new year! What better way to start it than by exploring ways to better communication with others and ourselves.
Conscious communication and mastery of how to listen go hand in hand. When you are truly listening to others, your presence and attention invites others to open their hearts to match you. Instead of waiting for others to be loving and kind, meet them with an open heart and invite them to open theirs. If they do, great! If they don’t, that is more than okay too. Empowerment of self means aligning with the realization that you get to live open-heartedly whether others join you in living open-heartedly or not.
Your loving attentiveness to another is powerful. Last weekend at Whole Foods my heart flew open when I noticed an 8 month old little girl in the deli. She beamed and lit up at my joy in seeing her.
Will you do that with others? You are cordially invited to have a complete and total blast practicing this with your family, friends, and everyone else in your life. Play with it! Try setting it up as an experiment. Give someone your full open-hearted attention and just watch how they respond.
Like everything else, life is about balance. Make sure you check in with yourself and give yourself a good listening to throughout the day as well. Ask yourself, “What are my wants, needs and desires?” Remember, you are innocent for wanting what you want, so please don’t make yourself wrong. Honesty with yourself invites you to live more honestly within all of your relationships. Intimacy with yourself opens you to be more intimate with others. What a wonderful practice to start off this new year.
